Since filming began for my new HGTV show, I’ve had to completely overhaul my self-care routine.
I went from wearing no face makeup, using zero hair products, eating on a regular schedule, and sleeping until I naturally woke up to doing the opposite of all that, literally overnight.
For a few weeks, I went on with my normal regimes without realizing that a new makeup and hair routine, a new sleeping schedule, and essentially a completely different lifestyle would require different self-care. It took me a few breakouts and a few over-tired mornings to clue in, and it took a while to perfect a new system, but I’ve consciously and deliberately struck some balance!
Because more than just beauty, tied into all of this is wellness.
It would be very easy for me — or anyone in my position — to let stress overwhelm me. I’ve now signed on to film another HGTV show (Home To Win, here I come!) but on the flip-side, I’ve had to succumb to a crazy-busy schedule, all while juggling many moving parts, being nimble on my feet, and remaining as fresh, knowledgable and “on” as possible. Not to mention looking rested and fresh-faced.
It’s a lot. And I’m pleased that I enjoy it and can handle it, but that doesn’t mean the lack of sleep, long hours, and far commutes don’t physically take a toll. And when you’re on-camera, anyone and their dog would want to look and feel their best, so that’s what inspired this post.
Today, I’m sharing the products and things I use and do daily to take care of number one and keep me feeling healthy and happy.
Cleanser: I use Sukin Purifying Gel Cleanser in the morning and their charcoal cleanser at night.
Exfoliant: After washing my face at night, I exfoliate with Eminence Organics Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant. Yes, exfoliating daily is overkill for most people, but I’m now wearing full-face TV makeup all day, every day for up to 16 hours, so I personally need it daily.
Face Masque: Once a week, I enjoy a face masque. I’ve been using Artifact Skin Co.’s products for over a year, and I can’t imagine switching. Two of my faves are their Glacial Coast Detox masque and their Egyptian Honey Rose masque.
Hair + Nails
Shampoo: I was using John Frieda Multi-Tone Revealing shampoo for a while, and I found it produced nice subtle highlights and lowlights, but I find it too harsh for daily use. I use it 1-2 times per week, and the other 5-6 times, I use L’Oréal EverCrème sulfate-free nourishing shampoo.
Conditioner + Masques: I only condition and repair-treat my hair on weekends. I love Artifact Skin Co.’s Glossy Mane masque.
Hairspray + Product: On-set, my hair and makeup guru Lynne and I recently fell in love with Verb Ghost Oil and Moroccan Oil dry shampoo for my hair for how workable and brushable they are. I also love Artifact Skin Co.’s Milky Waves Hair Mist.
Nails: Nail-wise, I’m dead-set on CND Shellac’s Field Fox colour — or any similar taupe-dusty lilac-grey. It’s the perfect neutral.
Supplements: I now wake up at 6am, and I’m eating more sporadically, so I’ve upped my vitamin game to stay healthy and feeling great. On a daily basis, I take Webber Naturals Oméga-3, B12, a multi-vitamin for women, a formula for better hair, skin and nails, and D drops.
Diet: For multiple reasons, I’ve given up gluten and I’ve lessened my consumption of dairy and caffeine (I have coffee/dairy maybe once a week). I feel way better and more energetic.
Eyes + Brows: Love love love L’Oréal Voluminous Féline mascara and Lancôme eyebrow gel.
Lips: Jay Manuel’s lip pencils, Revlon lip crayons, L’Oréal Le Matte lip pencils.
Face: Makeup Forever HD foundation, MAC pressed powder, GOSH blush.
