Designing + Planning for a Bathroom Renovation

It’s bitter-sweet to say, but I’m preparing for a bathroom renovation.

Bitter-sweet because I love my current bathroom. It’s not nearly perfect and it’s lacking major storage, but it’s original to the home and has been the only space I’ve unleashed pink in. Sure, it puts a smile on my face, but in the long-run, it’s had its fair share of mini-renos and now it’s time to face the music and bring it up to date with the rest of the house.

A lot of the tiles are cracked and split, the window in the shower is framed in wood (so yes, imagine water spraying onto wood for decades), and storage is still a mega issue. We have a tiny medicine cabinet and one small unit above the toilet that only offers enough storage for items smaller than a can of hairspray. Our towels, TP, makeup, and almost every product we use when in the bathroom, is stored outside of our bathroom—and that sucks.

So in the next few months, wish us luck as we undergo a bathroom renovation. Unlike our DIY kitchen reno, I want to hire the contracting of this project out. I will do the design and be the project manager, but there are so many considerations with this space (plumbing, electrical, heated floors, structural), that I want done professionally. I will do the demo and source all the fixtures and finishes to save money, but leave the construction to a pro.

So, without further ado, let’s chat about the overall design vision! I’m thinking glass partition, washed oak, greys and putty tones, contemporary finishes, built-ins, and milking every square inch of space I have. Below are a bunch of inspiration images I’ve pinned. (Sources at bottom of post.)

Enter into Wayfair’s 2017 Trade Tastemaker Awards

They’re baaaa-aaaack!

Yes indeedy, the Wayfair Trade Tastemaker Awards are back for a third year—and this year they’re shaping up to be stupendous. With five different award categories you can submit your projects to, submissions are open to Canadians as well (cheers).

As for how the winners will be chosen? Well, look no further than yours truly! That’s right, I’ll be helping determine whose interiors reign supreme a la Iron Chef—only nix the knives and flames and add in the company I’ll be alongside: the amazing Chip Wade and Alison Victoria.

As part of the campaign (deliberations are February 9th and awards in late March), I’ve been asked to write a few articles and give me two design cents for others, so click the following images to check out each article:

So if you’re a designer who takes risks, has a unique voice, and you’re brimming with talent, submit your projects today. I just may cast my vote for you to win. 🙂

Catching Zzz’s With Tempur-Pedic

An Eclectic Boho Bedroom with Tempur Pedic

Sleep is important. Duh.

But only recently I realized the quality of my R&R wasn’t up to snuff. For years, I slept on a crap-tress (AKA a crappy mattress) but a) I was a young new homeowner, so spending money on something I already had wasn’t a priority, and b) I worked from home, so I slept long hours, woke up naturally and had a comfy couch at my disposal at all times, so it wasn’t important to me… then.

Once I signed on to film my HGTV show, I had to completely change my sleep schedule (and, well, my self-care routine too).

I now get up at 5 or 6am daily and don’t get home to bed most nights until late. After a few months of feeling crotchety upon waking,– which should not be the case when you’re 26 — I realized I needed to do something. Between Piper jumping on and off the bed all night and sleeping on popped coils, I simply wasn’t getting a good quality sleep.

So I made a big commitment and decided to update my sleep game with Tempur-Pedic‘s Embrace Queen mattress, a new 4.5″ boxspring (which is awesomely thin), and Soft + Conforming pillows. Naturally, I used this as an opportunity to update my bedroom’s design. And today — two weeks into sleeping on my new Tempur-Pedic products — I’m sharing my honest review and my tips for getting a better night’s sleep.

A Charming Industrial Loft (Outfitted in Pantone's Colour of 2017)

This loft in Madrid is loaded with industrial charm — and just so happens to flaunt Pantone’s colour of the year, 2017. I just love how plants and touches of green warm up and bring life to the space.
